Is Nassau Finally Worth Getting Off the Ship? (New Cruise Port Walkthrough 2025)
For years, the phrase "stay on the ship" was practically the motto for cruisers docking in Nassau, Bahamas. But on our recent trip, we decided to get off and see if the $300 million renovation of the Nassau Cruise Port has actually changed anything.
Spoiler alert: It has.
We took a full walking tour of the new terminal, the Junkanoo Museum, and the downtown area to see if Nassau is finally worth your time. Here is what we found.
1. The New Arrival Experience
The difference is immediate. As soon as you step off the pier, you are greeted by new covered walkways (a lifesaver in the Bahamian sun) and a massive, clean arrival plaza.
Gone is the chaos of the old exit. The new port area feels like a destination in itself, with local vendors, coffee shops, and plenty of seating. It feels significantly safer and more organized than the old "gauntlet" we used to walk through.
2. The Junkanoo Museum & Amphitheater
One of the coolest additions is the Junkanoo Museum, right inside the port area. It celebrates the vibrant culture, music, and costumes of the Bahamas.
They have also added a massive Amphitheater which hosts local events and concerts. Even if there isn't a show playing, it’s a great spot to grab a photo with the ship in the background.
3. Shopping: Local vs. Tourist Traps
The new port puts a heavy focus on local artisans. Instead of just generic duty-free diamonds, there are booths for:
Authentic Bahamian Straw Work: You can buy handmade hats and bags right in the secure port area.
Tortuga Rum Cake: A classic staple.
Local Hot Sauce & Jams: Great for souvenirs.
If you venture just outside the gates, the famous Straw Market is still there (and yes, the aggressive sales tactics are still there too), but the port itself offers a much more relaxed shopping experience.
4. Dining: Senor Frogs & Beyond
We walked down to Senor Frogs for lunch (a cruise classic). The Fish Burger was delicious, and despite the loud music, the food hit the spot. If you want to stay closer to the ship, the new port area has its own food and drink stands, including a gelato station that looked amazing.
The Verdict: Stay on the Ship or Go?
GO.
The new Nassau Cruise Port is a massive upgrade. It’s clean, it supports local businesses, and it gives you plenty to do without ever having to take a taxi or deal with aggressive vendors if you don't want to.
While the town outside the gates is still the same old Nassau, the port area itself is now a destination worth exploring.
